Sciatica Overview

The longest nerve in the body, the sciatic nerve, travels from the lower back to the legs and is the source of pain that characterises the condition known as sciatica. Usually beginning in the lower back or buttocks, the discomfort might travel down one or both legs.

Sciatica Pathophysiology

As seen in the video above, a ruptured or bulging disc in the spine, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), degenerative disc disease, or even pregnancy, are just a few of the causes of sciatica. Incorrect lifting practises, bad posture, and muscle imbalances can all contribute to the illness.

Sciatica Symptoms

The affected limb or foot may experience pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness as a result of sciatica. A long period of time spent sitting or standing, as well as actions that involve twisting or bending the spine, can all exacerbate the pain, which can range in intensity from mild to severe.

Sciatica Treatment

A variety of self-care techniques, including rest, cold or heat therapy, light exercises, and stretches, as well as over-the-counter painkillers or prescription drugs when necessary, are frequently used to treat sciatica. In some circumstances, more intrusive procedures like surgery or corticosteroid injections may be required.
